India Routs South Africa 6-1, Eliminates African Champions From World Cup Contention

South Africa’s persistence did eventually yield something. In the 55th minute, Hannah Pearce’s drag flick from a penalty corner deflected off the Indian first runner, and Kayla de Waal showed sharp awareness to touch the ball home from close range. It was the team’s first goal of the tournament. The score survived an Indian referral, offering at least that much.

By contrast, the broader pool picture compounded South Africa’s position further. China defeated England 4-2 in Tuesday’s other Pool D fixture, a result that sealed South Africa’s elimination from medal contention. Their opening 4-0 loss to England on 16 August had already placed them under severe pressure.

South Africa’s final pool assignment is against China on Thursday, 20 August 2026, at 09:30. Coach Inky Zondi will look for a positive result to carry into the classification phase, where teams outside the medal positions compete for final standings. Whether that match can restore any confidence ahead of those fixtures is the question the squad now faces.
