South Africa Soccer Star Adams Dead at 25 After World Cup Campaign

Midfielder's sudden death in Cape Town prompts investigation and tributes from football leadership.

Jayden Adams, the 25-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder who had just completed South Africa’s historic 2026 World Cup campaign, was found dead at a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning. Police opened an investigation. The cause of death has not been confirmed.

Adams had featured in all three of South Africa’s group stage matches at the tournament, which ended with a round-of-32 exit against co-hosts Canada. That run marked the first time South Africa had reached the knockout stage of a World Cup, a milestone that gave his final competitive appearances an added weight. His international career had begun in 2022, and he went on to represent Bafana Bafana at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where the squad reached the semi-finals.

At club level, Adams built his career at Stellenbosch FC before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. At Sundowns, one of the continent’s most decorated franchises, he won league and African Champions League titles and established himself as a key figure in the squad.

The circumstances of his death prompted immediate calls for restraint. South Africa’s minister of sport, arts and culture, Gayton McKenzie, issued a statement urging the public and media to hold back from speculation. “The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed, and I wish to appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation, while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given the space and privacy they need at this incredibly difficult time,” McKenzie said. “Any official information will be communicated by the appropriate parties in due course.”

McKenzie also framed the loss in terms of what South African football had been watching develop over several years. “South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international,” he said.

The South African Football Players Union released its own statement, describing Adams as someone who had represented his country with “pride, courage and distinction” during what it called a historic World Cup campaign. “His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, team-mates, clubs, the football fraternity and the country at large. South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer,” the union said.

One detail from the tournament underscored the kind of player Adams was. He started South Africa’s 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in Group A having learned only hours before kick-off that his grandmother had died.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino added his condolences on behalf of the global football community. “My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at Fifa and the global football community, are with his family, friends and team-mates. The Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace,” Infantino said.

The police investigation remains open, and no official cause of death has been announced.
